I Photographed 5 Things at Home — AI Solved All the Problems
I snapped photos of 5 random home problems and asked AI to fix them. Here's what happened and the exact prompts I used.
Last weekend I decided to run an experiment. I walked around my apartment, photographed 5 things that were annoying me, and asked AI for solutions.
The results surprised me. Here's exactly what I did.
How This Works
ChatGPT (the free version) lets you upload photos and ask questions about them. You just tap the camera icon, snap a picture, and type your question.
I used this for everyday home problems. No fancy apps, no technical knowledge needed.
Problem 1: The Mystery Plant That's Dying
I have this plant on my balcony. It's been looking sad for weeks. Yellow leaves, droopy stems. I had no idea what was wrong.
I took a photo and used this prompt:
prompt This is my plant. It's been looking sick for 3 weeks. Can you identify what plant this is and tell me what's wrong? Give me simple steps to save it.
AI identified it as a peace lily. It told me the yellow leaves meant overwatering, not underwatering like I thought. It gave me a simple schedule: water only when the top inch of soil is dry.
Two weeks later, new green leaves appeared.
Problem 2: The Stain on My Couch
My couch has this weird stain. Coffee? Wine? I honestly don't remember. I've been covering it with a pillow for months.
I photographed the stain and the couch label:
prompt Here's a stain on my couch and a photo of the care label. What type of stain does this look like? How do I remove it safely without damaging the fabric?
AI analyzed the fabric code on the label (apparently "W" means water-safe) and suggested the stain looked like coffee. It gave me a three-step cleaning method using dish soap and cold water.
I tried it that evening. The stain is 90% gone.
Problem 3: The Weird Noise from My Fridge
My fridge started making this clicking sound. I was worried it was dying. A new fridge costs a fortune.
I couldn't photograph a sound, so I recorded a short video and uploaded that:
prompt My fridge is making this clicking noise (you can hear it in the video). Should I be worried? Is this something I can fix myself or do I need a technician?
AI explained that clicking often means the compressor is struggling, usually because of dust buildup on the back coils. It told me to unplug the fridge, pull it away from the wall, and vacuum the coils.
I did exactly that. The clicking stopped. I saved hundreds of euros.
Problem 4: The Cable Disaster Behind My TV
The cables behind my TV look like a snake pit. Every time I need to unplug something, it takes 10 minutes.
I took a photo of the chaos:
prompt Here's the cable mess behind my TV. I have limited space and a tight budget. How can I organize this using things I probably already have at home or can buy cheaply?
AI suggested using toilet paper rolls to hold coiled cables, binder clips to label each cable, and a shoe box as a hidden cable station. Total cost: zero euros because I had everything at home.
It took 20 minutes. Now I can actually find what I need.
Problem 5: The Crack in My Wall
There's a thin crack running down my bedroom wall. I've been staring at it for months, wondering if it's serious or just cosmetic.
I photographed it up close:
prompt There's this crack on my wall. Should I be worried about structural damage? If it's just cosmetic, how do I fix it myself?
AI explained that thin, straight cracks are usually just paint cracks from temperature changes — nothing structural. It gave me a simple fix: spackling paste, sandpaper, and touch-up paint.
I'll tackle it next weekend.
What I Learned
AI doesn't replace experts. But for everyday stuff — the small annoyances you keep putting off — it's incredibly useful.
The key is giving good context. Include photos of labels, measurements, or multiple angles. The more information AI has, the better its answers.
Your Turn
Pick one thing in your home that's been bugging you. Photograph it. Upload it to ChatGPT with a clear question.
You might solve a problem you've been ignoring for months.
