How I Built a Weekly Meal Plan in 30 Seconds

One prompt, one meal plan, one shopping list. See how AI saves you 2 hours every Sunday.

Every Sunday evening, the same story: you open the fridge, have no idea what to cook, and end up ordering delivery. Sound familiar? It happened to me hundreds of times.

Until I tried one prompt.

The Problem

I want a meal plan for the week, but:

  • No time to search for recipes
  • Want to eat healthy without overthinking it
  • Need a shopping list, not just ideas

The Prompt

Here's the prompt I use — copy-paste ready:

prompt
Create a weekly meal plan (Monday–Friday) for 2 people.

Rules:
- Mediterranean diet
- Budget: max €50 per week
- Cooking time: max 30 minutes per meal
- Lunch and dinner only
- Use overlapping ingredients (if I buy chicken, use it in 2+ meals)

Output format:
1. Meal plan table (day | lunch | dinner)
2. Shopping list divided by category (vegetables, proteins, dairy, other)
3. Estimated cost per category

The Result

In 28 seconds I had:

  • Complete 5-day meal plan
  • 23 items on the shopping list
  • Estimated cost: €47.50
  • Bonus: prep tips for Sunday (batch cooking suggestions)

The key was the "overlapping ingredients" rule — instead of buying 15 different things, the AI designed meals that share ingredients. Buy one whole chicken, make souvlaki on Monday and soup on Wednesday.

Why It Works

Three things make this prompt effective:

First, it gives constraints. Without a budget and time limit, AI gives you generic suggestions. With constraints, you get an actionable plan.

Second, it defines the output format. You don't want a paragraph of text — you want a table and a list. Tell it what format you need.

Third, it thinks practically. The "overlapping ingredients" rule is a meta-constraint that makes the whole plan more realistic.

Takeaway

Next time you think "what should I cook", don't search for recipes. Take this prompt, customize the constraints (budget, diet, number of people), and hit Enter.

30 seconds. That's all that separates you.
